To avoid crying when peeling onions, try one of these old-fashioned ideas
- peel them near an open window so that the air takes the fumes outside
- cut the root end off first
- put the onions in the freezer for about and hour before cutting.
- put the onions into a sink of water and peel them under water.
To keep mice out of the house

Mice don’t like peppermint so you can keep them away by painting woodwork with oil of peppermint or by soaking cotton-wool balls in oil of peppermint and placing them where there is evidence of mice.

To remove mildew from ceilings

Mix 1 part of household bleach to 4 parts water in a plastic spray bottle.
Mildew (or mould) can become a real problem in the colder weather.
Spray the ceiling away from you and start at the area on the opposite side of the room from the door so you don’t have to walk through the spray to get out.
Its probably worth while covering furniture with an old sheet or towel in case any of the bleach lands on it. Using this level of dilution shouldn’t cause a problem but better to be safe than sorry
To freshen a lettuce

If you have a lettuce in the fridge that has gone limp, try freshening it by soaking it in ice clod water and a teaspoonful of sugar.
