Miscellaneous stains

April 6, 2009 | Filed under Stain removal

We have all spilled something at some time in our lives.  And how frustrating when you can’t get that red wine stain out of the light coloured carpet, or off your white shirt.

Some of the stain removal techniques we have included here are from Aunt Daisy – a New Zealand radio icon in the mid 20th century.  Her radio programmes are legendary.

Red wine on carpet or clothing    Dampen stain with cold water and cover with a thick layer of salt.  Or soak thoroughly in cold water and pat dry with an old towel until the water runs clear

Blood   Soak in cold water (don’t use anything warm or hot as that will set the protein in the blood and make the stain difficult to remove)

Milky tea or coffee    Soak the stain in cold water and pat dry with an old towel.  Don’t use anything warm or hot on the stain as that will set the protein in the blood and make the stain difficult to remove.

Grease, fat or oil, or any greasy food on clothes      Place the stained area between two sheets of paper towels or other absorbent material then press with a hot iron.  The greasy stain will soak into the absorbent paper and out of the fabric.

Chewing gum in hair    Try an oil based remedy like peanut butter, olive oil.
