Mulled wine

June 24, 2009 | Filed under Extras

Here’s a great winter warmer drink for when you have friends or family around on a frosty night or to cheer up a grey and dismal day.

Ingredients

2 bottles of red wine
600 ml cold water
2 teaspoons brown sugar
1 stick cinnamon
2 whole cloves
1 teaspoon ground ginger or fresh grated or sliced ginger
juice of ½ lemon

Method

  1. Pour the wine into a large saucepan and bring to the boil
  2. Add all the other ingredients
  3. Simmer gently uncovered for about 30 minutes
  4. Strain through a sieve and serve in heatproof glasses

Notes

  1. The alcohol is removed when the wine is boiled so this is a non-alcoholic drink.
  2. Shiraz, merlot, cabernet sauvignon or cabernet blends will all work well.  Use the best you are prepared to ‘cook’!
