If someone smokes in your house, you can remove the smoky odours by putting a shallow bowl of baking soda dissolved in warm water in each of the affected areas for several hours. The baking soda will absorb the odours. This is especially effective after a smoky party.
Prevent blocked drains

you can prevent household drains from blocking if you give them a monthly treatment with baking soda and vinegar. First slowly pour 1/4 cup dry baking soda down the drain. Then pour in 1/4 cup white vinegar.
The vinegar will fizz as it mixes with the baking soda. Once the fizzing has stopped, flush the drain with cold water from the tap.
To clean a vacuum flask

If your vacuum flask has developed a nasty smell from being closed up for a long time, pour in 1 tablespoon baking soda and fill with boiling water. Leave to stand for 15 minutes then rinse well before using.
To clean the inside of your washing machine

Mix 1/2 cup baking soda with water till you have a smooth paste. Rub the inside of the washing machine bowl with the paste. This will remove stains and odours. Put the rinse cycle on to rinse the bowl before washing clothes again.
